Protect Your Garages From Heat, Wind, and Rain
mixed size floor protector pads your car from the elements and keeping your garage door sealing in good shape is important, but most homeowners don’t think about the garage seal itself. Garage doors are made of a variety of materials, including plastic, metal and fiberglass. Some garage doors are insulated, while others aren’t. Before you decide to have a new garage door installed, it’s a good idea to understand how your existing garage door works.
When the garage door bottom seal is damaged or broken, it’s important to take care of the problem as soon as possible. If not addressed, the moisture will seep into the ceiling above and cause rotting. You may even be able to see the insulation below starting to bubble, indicating a leak in the insulation. In addition, the garage door bottom seal may be completely unable to seal the opening at all, which will allow cool air to get in. By sealing it properly, you can keep both the inside and the outside air sealed and insulated, and help prevent excessive heat from escaping and moisture from entering.
There are different lengths of rubber seals available. Depending on what you need, you’ll need to purchase a seal that’s specifically designed for the job. For example, if you have a rubber garage door seal that stops at a particular point, you’ll want a different length than if you want the seal to cover the entire door. The rubber seal generally comes in three different lengths: regular, elongated and extra-large.
A regular and extra-wide seal is useful for around six feet or so. They are typically sold in packs of two to four and require no installation. You simply cut the long piece to the desired length and use a mounting strap to hang it in a nearby location. Some manufacturers make extra-long pieces that can reach up to twenty feet or more. These kinds are typically sold in sets of four or more.
An elongated rubber seal can be useful for preventing the door from getting accidentally opened while the mechanism is in use. These are sold in single pieces and are typically sold in bundles of four to six. They are made with an extra-thick rubber compound that provides greater temperature resistance than regular polyurethane. This means that a door left open in this type of seal will be more durable than one made with regular polyurethane, and will likely last longer without needing to be replaced.
Finally, some manufacturers sell t-ends for use on garage doors. T-ends are sheets of protective thermoset material that is placed between the outside and inside layers of the door. Like the stretchy rubber seal, t-ends must be installed along the full width of the doorway before it can be put in place. If the to-end isn’t provided by the manufacturer, the customer should consult instructions provided by the manufacturer. Like the other types of garage door sealers, t-ends provide great protection against heat, wind and rain, but they are less durable than the stretchy rubber and polyurethane products.
